It’s time to remove the stigma around mental illness. Speak as openly about it as any physical illness and we will get to a point where people won’t hesitate to get the help they need.
Imagine if a person had diabetes. We wouldn’t expect them to “get over it”. We would encourage them to see a doctor who might suggest getting their insulin in balance, perhaps losing some weight or other concrete steps to treat the root disease.
Because we have so much shame surrounding mental illness, it tends to be covered up as if it will magically heal itself.
Once our dialog in society includes frank and open discussion about mental illness, we can clean out the wound that festers in an atmosphere of neglect, shame and fear.
Do your part to discuss mental health in a factual maner and we’ll create a world where individuals will be encouraged to seek help rather than hide in a cloud of despair.
