Lines for Life and NPAIHB: Promoting Mental Health in Oregon’s Native American Communities

For Oregon’s Tribal communities, healing and prevention begin with culture, identity, connection, and traditions passed down through generations. That belief is at the heart of the partnership between Lines for Life and the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB).

In a recent video created by NPAIHB, Lines for Life staff reflect on how this partnership has taught them to listen differently, show up with humility, and recognize culture as a foundation for healing rather than a barrier to care. It has challenged Lines for Life to educate ourselves, to ask better questions, and to ensure that what we offer truly resonates and works for the people we serve. This work is not about numbers or checking boxes. It’s about serving real people with real experiences.

Culture As a Guiding Principle

NPAIHB works to eliminate health disparities and improve the quality of life of American Indians and Alaska Natives by supporting Northwest Tribes in their delivery of culturally appropriate, high-quality healthcare. Our partnership with NPAIHB reflects a shared commitment to weaving together community support networks that honor tribal traditions while providing accessible mental health resources.

In our work with Tribal communities, we’ve learned meaningful support requires more than resources. It requires taking a step back, demonstrating humility, and listening with intent. Oregon’s Tribal communities remind us prevention doesn’t begin with systems or statistics. It begins with culture.

Culture shapes how we understand the world, how we seek help, and what healing feels like. That’s why we approach every conversation with the belief the people we serve are experts in their own lives and cultures. Our role is not to force a solution, but to walk in alignment, and learn together. Culture is central to mental health, resilience, and connection.

In the video, staff emphasize this point by sharing what it means to support callers from Tribal communities in ways that honor identity, lived experience, and cultural knowledge. They speak candidly about learning when to slow down, how to listen beyond words, and why effective crisis support begins with respect and not assumptions. Rather than applying one-size-fits-all approaches, Lines for Life recognizes callers are experts in their own culture and in what has or hasn’t worked for them.

Support for Every Background

Oregon tribes have led the way with their commitment to tribal practices and culture as prevention. Lines for Life is ready to continue being woven into that fabric, learning from tribal partners and supporting communities across the state.
Lines for Life remains committed to serving not only our Tribal communities, but anyone who reaches out and needs help. While our staff may not look like or sound like every caller, we are committed to providing compassionate, culturally responsive and informed support.
