Construction continues to have the second highest rate of suicide of any occupation in the country. Behind that statistic are real people, crews, and struggles that too often go unspoken. Chronic pain from physically demanding work. A culture built around toughness, where asking for help can feel like admitting weakness. Substance misuse, sometimes used to cope with pain or stress. A lack of support systems built for the realities of jobsite life. These are just a few of the challenges construction workers carry, often quietly, often alone.
Knowing where to turn can be its own obstacle. That’s exactly what the Alianza para la Prevención del Suicidio en la Construcción (CSPP) was built to change.
CSPP exists to break down the barriers keeping construction workers from getting support, and to challenge the stigma that says struggling is something to hide rather than something to talk about. That means offering resources built specifically for this industry, not generic mental health messaging that doesn’t reflect the realities of the job. Toolbox talks bring mental health conversations directly to crews and their jobsites. New anonymous mental health assessments give workers a judgment-free way to check in with themselves and get pointed toward real support based on their results. And the Línea de Atención a la Construcción offers free, confidential support 24/7, for workers and their families, answered by people who understand what this industry asks of the people in it.
Construction Suicide Prevention Week is a reminder that no one has to suffer in silence, and checking in on the people around us matters. We encourage you to learn more about CSPP and the Línea de Atención a la Construcción, as well as whatever mental health resources your own workplace already offers. Support may be closer than you think.
Keep having these conversations well beyond this week and throughout the year. The more we talk about mental health openly, the less power stigma holds. If you’re a construction worker, a foreman, a safety manager, or simply someone who cares about the people building the places we live and work, this week is for you. Whether that means calling the Construction CareLine, starting a toolbox talk on your next jobsite, or simply asking a coworker how they’re really doing, every conversation matters.
You are not alone, and we are here to help when life gets hard.
